The IFPP Mission
To promote both professional photography and the professional photographers themselves
As the global organization for the photography profession, The International Federation of Professional Photographers are committed to protecting the public interest by supporting the development of all sectors of the profession around the world.
The IFPP are not a trade body or similar organisation, rather, we exist to promote professionalism in photography and the importance of choosing a professional photographer when in need of quality work with high standards.
Members of The IFPP join because they believe in being the best and promoting excellence in everything that they do and understand the difference between using a highly skilled professional and an inexperienced amateur.
The IFPP regularly hear stories from around the world about both business and domestic customers hiring photographers with little to no experience who are usually uninsured and unable to make good any damage that they do.
The IFPP are dedicated to spreading the word about the value of choosing a photographer who can deliver quality, professionalism and outstanding customer service each and every time.
The general publics view of photographers has changed dramatically in the last decade or so. Not so long ago the professional photographer was recognised as such and was the first port of call when someone needed quality work.
With the advent of digital cameras many people who would never have dreamed of becoming a photographer have decided to advertise their services as a photographer and whilst everyone has to start somewhere it is all too easy for someone today to buy a cheap digital camera, get a quick website made and advertise themselves as a “professional” photographer.
The definition of professional has been argued and debated amongst photographers for decades but the argument is moot as both sides are correct.
There are those that say it is how professionally you treat your customers that makes you a professional and there are those who say it is if you charge money for your photography.
It is our belief that both of these are right.
There is currently no law to prevent anyone buying a camera from anywhere such as eBay or a high street retailer for example and setting themselves up as a photographer. To make matters worse they can then use the word ‘professional’ on their website, letterhead and promotional materials and once again there is no law to prevent them from doing so. Doctors, lawyers, electricians and many other skilled people must pass rigorous tests to ensure that they are competent but not photographers.
So how do the general public know that the photographer that they are choosing is a professional? The IFPP is the answer.
The IFPP photographers must satisfy a number of strict criteria including holding appropriate insurance. Photographers insurance is costly and the majority of people who dabble in photography as a hobby and who think they can make quick and easy money at it seldom purchase this necessary product.
